do a little advertising in a local newspaper
do a great job and charge a fair price
other people will refer you business if you do a good job. in about a year you will be so busy
check with your local government for any license you may need
hire a good accountant to keep you current with the irs
There may be legal requirements to operate your home improvement business, depending on where you live and the type of home improvements you will be performing.
You need to check with your local municipality and find out what the requirements are to do home improvement in your community. You may be required to obtain a license and also complete training and or testing. You may also need the proper insurance including liability and workers’ compensation insurance.
You should also obtain legal advice regarding contracts and how to protect yourself if someone does not pay you what you are owed.
I would highly recommend that if you have never run this type of business before that you take some advanced training courses, consult with a CPA, an insurance agent and an attorney specializing in construction and work with your local community to determine licensing requirements.
After you have all your ducks in a row, set up meetings with people / other businesses that would likely have the opportunity to refer you. Establish a relationship with them so they will be willing to give you a chance by referring you on a job. Start with small projects and make sure at the end of the job the customer is happy with the work you have done. They will refer you to other people and be a great reference you can provide to other potential clients.
Good luck!
