If you have a 401k account you may be able to borrow from it for home improvements.  Check with your provider.  Where I work we can borrow nearly half of what we have in 401k for home improvements.  You have to pay it back with interest but you are kind of paying yourself back since it is your money to begin with.

Credit cards are not a very good option but definitely an option.
